Care & Maintenance of your knife

Thank you for purchasing a Montana Hammer Knife! With a little care, your knife will continue to take care of you for years.

Tarnish & Polishing

Blade tarnish is a natural occurrence with carbon steel or non stainless steels, however it’s easy to manage. Using Flitz Metal polish will generally clean and polish tarnish and light corrosion from your blade easily, and buff to a nice shine. Doing the same with your handle guard and pommels will also bring life back to the entire knife. If your guard and pommel are scratched, progressing from 600 grit- 1,000 grit sand paper will often polish them out, then using Flitz metal polish and some elbow grease, you can bring your handle furniture back to a mirror polish.

Information about Wood Handles

Some woods although stable still benefit from an occasional coat of the product Howard’s Feed-N-Wax. This product both conditions and polishes wood handle materials to a presentation shine.

Sharpening

Sharpening a knife well, can be an art in itself, and takes some time and practice to perfect if you’re new to it. Montana Hammer Knives edges are set at 20 degrees, although that can vary just slightly from sharpening system to sharpening system, so some eye adjustment may be necessary. Some prefer to freehand stone their knives, use a Work Sharp system, which I recommend some caution using, or a Lansky knife sharpening system which many prefer and use on their Montana Hammer Knives.
